20mm Vulcan Rifle - “The 20x102mm pistol (or 20mm “volcano”) I got the idea when I saw a lightly used barrel for sale at Gunbroker for $900. I bought a keg around 2013, submitted an ATF form 1 to make a destruction device... and then did nothing for about 2 years. - Josh
The 20mm cannon is iconic among NuggetFest visitors across the United States. In 2016, Josh Geho finally got the motivation to start the project, so he began developing plans for a mechanical shop. He knew he wanted a simple, solid performance and (most importantly) easy for the amateur to work with. After a short thought, he decided on the "falling block" action, except that he will lift the block with his hand. To do this, the user pulls the chain attached to the lock block.

To make the gun, Josh bought a 3x36 inch 4140 steel bar on eBay for what he thought was a fair price. According to him, "4140 steel is a pretty good grade of garden gun steel." It is quite easy to work with, has exceptional strength and can heal to some extent. All this at a relatively low price. From this 36-inch stock, he made almost all of the gun's components, cutting the pieces one by one with a band saw.

The firing pin (or more accurately called the "electrode") is a piece of 303 stainless steel that is completely insulated from the rear block with acetal (aka "delrin"). By reading military manuals and case studies, Josh got a good feel for the voltage, current, and even timing required for reliable ignition. He built his first detonator inside a Nintendo 64 controller for nostalgia and humor.
The system is powered by two CR123 batteries. Press and hold one button to feed current from the batteries to a transformer that steps it up to 240 volts and then stores it in a flashing capacitor. Once charged, press another button to release the stored current into the pad. It's a brutal charge that will shred metal if you let it spark. Burning primer is probably overkill, but it works. "I don't want to get hit by it." This first detonator was eventually destroyed when it was left in light rain, resulting in a short circuit and melting of some of the switches.
Josh has since created a second detonator that is much more durable, though he calls it "simple and uninspired." He made the M2 tripod cannon mount. Not to be confused with the M3 tripod for the M2 machine gun. He borrowed this passage from his 1919. The gun is controlled by a traverse and elevation (T/E) adapter. Used "View All Open Gen 1" for preview which works surprisingly well. Josh fired over 30 rounds through the cannon. This powerful ammunition was responsible for bending and breaking the legs of the tripod under the strong recoil.
Ammo for this behemoth is hard to come by right now. You can't just run into Cabellas and ask for a box of "20mm Vulcan Electrically Primed Ammo." Most of the ammo Josh has found so far has come from contacts he's made with dealers at gun shows and saved searches on Gunbroker. It usually fires M55A2 TP (shooting practice) rounds from its cannon. The M55A2 fires a ~1530 grain shell at nearly 3300 fps. Josh averaged about $11 per delivered round. Later, he sells the empty boxes for about $2 each, which helps offset some of the cost.

Don has been writing for The Kommando Blog since 2017. He is a firearms enthusiast, competitive shooter and collector of militaria. The Anzio 20mm is a beast of a rifle. Yes, 20mm. The use of 20 mm precision fire began before World War II with the Finns. They fielded the M39 Lathis that helped them slow down and nearly defeat Stalin's Soviet invasion of their borders before they became friends with FDR. The Finns managed to break through the thin armor of the pre-war Soviet tanks. This inflicted disproportionate losses on the stunned invading Russian army. They also used dummies to draw out Soviet snipers, who were successfully eliminated from a safe distance by the 20mm Lathi.
Beginning in 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army used the 20x124mm Kawamura Type 97 semi-automatic anti-tank rifle. The Type 97 weighed between 120 and 150 pounds, had a crew of four, and had terrible recoil without a brake tube. The rifle had no optics. It only had open sights, so it was mainly used against light armor, from fixed defensive positions. It could also fire the fully automatic 2083-grain High Explosive Incendiary at 2500 feet per second (fps) from a 7-round magazine. With the advent of a new generation of armor, both the M39 and Type 97 went the way of cavalry and biplanes - still used in combat, but not on the winning side.
The value of ultra-long-range sniping is a major asset of modern counter-terrorism. In both Afghanistan and Iraq, the use of the .50 BMG for precision fire has resulted in serious reductions in enemy strength during open and urban operations, with no collateral damage. The use of long-range precision fire is both cost-effective and easily integrated into combined operations. It also affords our warriors unprecedented protection when operating under the watchful eye of one or more of these powerful weapons. Recent evidence is the elimination of an enemy machine gunner by Canadian sniper Rob Furlong. He was firing a .50 BMG repeater from over a mile and a half away.

Mike Remo has been working with firearms for 16 years and has produced hundreds of .50 BMG rifles that impress with accuracy and minimal recoil. Anzio's lightweight .50 BMG magazine weighs 13.5 lbs. Meanwhile, the lightweight .50 is $5,000 and the slightly heavier model is $4,000—both with a 1 MOA or better guarantee. Users of both government and private security forces have given feedback that the accuracy of the Anzio Ironworks is as advertised and that, with its manageable recoil, it provides exceptional operational capability.
Based on this success, Mike Remo of Anzio Ironworks wanted to push the precision fire limit from 2,000 yards to the full 3,000 yards (and maybe even 3,500 yards). To achieve this, Mike developed the Mag-Fed 20x102mm Ultra Long Range Sniper Rifle System.
Using modern computerized optics, the 20mm Mag-Fed is effective against materiel and anti-snipers well beyond the range of the .50 BMG. But why is that important? Enemy fighters may have access to .50 BMG or similar sniper rifles; only 20mm weapons can outrange and dominate this type of threat.
